Visiting during services

The cathedral is a place of worship first.

No general closure at Mass

During a service there is a separate visiting route. That does not mean the cathedral closes for every Mass. Special celebrations and closed areas can differ from day to day, so check on the day.

Quiet and dress

Keep your voice low, switch your phone to silent and dress respectfully. Men take off hats, and shoulders should be covered. Everyone passes a security check.

What stays outside

Suitcases and luggage are not allowed, and backpacks should be kept to a minimum. Knives, scissors, other sharp objects, alcohol and aerosols are banned. Food, drink and smoking are not allowed inside.

Getting there in autumn 2026

The Métro closure is the main change.

Métro and RER

Métro line 4 serves Cité, and the RER B and C serve Saint-Michel-Notre-Dame. The Métro station Saint-Michel on line 4 is closed all day from 14 September to 19 December 2026, and trains do not stop there. Check current disruptions before you travel.

Fares

A single Métro, train or RER ticket costs €2.55, reduced €1.30, and a bus or tram ticket €2.05, reduced €1.05 (since 1 January 2026). The ticket to or from the airports costs €14, reduced €7.

Parking

The Lagrange-Maubert car park at 19 Rue Lagrange, 75005 Paris, charges €4.80 for 1 hour, €14.40 for 3 hours and €43.20 for 9 to 24 hours in 2026. There is no cathedral car park.

Works around the cathedral

The Square de l'Île-de-France behind the cathedral has been closed since 24 August 2026, and the city lists the closure into 2027. Do not plan a free walk around the whole east end.

Seasons and weather

Climate normals for Paris, not a forecast.

The hours of the cathedral do not change with the seasons. The tower and Sainte-Chapelle hours do. Average daily highs run from 7.6 °C in January to 25.7 °C in July, and rain falls in every month, from 41.8 mm in February to 69.0 mm in May (normals for 1991 to 2020). Spring and autumn are milder than high summer. Part of a visit is spent outdoors, so bring a layer or an umbrella. The tickets page explains how a reservation can shorten the wait.

Combine it with the rest of the day

Hours of nearby sights.

The Louvre has other hours. It is closed on Tuesday, and the Louvre opening hours guide lists its days and late openings. Sacré-Cœur in Montmartre is free and open daily from 06:30 to 22:30.
